Indications

(64635) Is the hyperthermia treatment being used in connection with radiation therapy? 
(64636) Is the hyperthermia treatment being used for the treatment of primary or metastatic cutaneous or subcutaneous superficial malignancies? 

Contraindications

(64637) Is the hyperthermia treatment being used alone without any concurrent treatments? 
(64638) Is the hyperthermia treatment being used in connection with chemotherapy?

Background for this Policy

Local hyperthermia for treatment of cancer consists of the use of heat to make tumors more susceptible to cancer therapy measures.

Local hyperthermia is covered under Medicare when used in connection with radiation therapy for the treatment of primary or metastatic cutaneous or subcutaneous superficial malignancies. It is not covered when used alone or in connection with chemotherapy.
