Causes
Tungiasis is caused by the penetration of the female sand flea into the skin. The flea lives in sandy environments, often in warm and dry regions.
Risk Factors
Living in or traveling to endemic regions, particularly coastal or semi-arid areas in Africa, Central and South America, and the Caribbean.
Walking barefoot or wearing open footwear in sandy, infested environments.
Symptoms
Intense itching and irritation at the site of infestation.
Black dot at the center of a swollen, white lesion.
Pain and discomfort in the affected area.
Possible secondary infections due to scratching or bacteria.
